Dear CW Families,
If we thought the first week of camp went fast, the second week of the session was even faster. Each day was packed in with fun! We had some Wacky Weather (ask your campers to teach you the new camp song) but that only made our days more special. Our week started off extra hot so we made sure to have additional time in the water. We changed our schedule on Monday to allow for more time at the pool and the lake. While Chalutzim and Ohalim were splashing in the pool, Noar left camp for their own water fun. The 8th graders packed up dinner and the CW jet skis and spent the afternoon at Fairport Harbor on Lake Erie while the 9th graders had a blast whitewater rafting on the Lower Yough in Ohiopyle, PA. But Noar wasn’t the only group that traveled away from camp; all of our villages had activities outside of camp this week.
Solel had their big 3-day trip to Cincinnati and Kentucky; highlights include visiting Kings Island, exploring Mammoth Cave, and canoeing in Hocking Hills. Chalutzim spent the day at Fun ‘n Stuff and Ohalim had more water fun at Splash Lagoon. Both groups returned to camp in time to have a relaxing night back in camp. And Noar just couldn’t stay in camp with everyone else out, so they also hit the road and spent the day Cedar Point.
As we head into Shabbat we prepare to take a break from the week and look forward to the week ahead. This week’s Shabbat will be led by the mighty village of Chalutzim. To prepare for leading Shabbat, Chalutzim played a game of “Mouth, Rock, Stick”. It is like “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, except that mouth beats rock, rock beats stick, and stick beats mouth. In the beginning of this week’s parsha (Torah portion), Miriam dies. Legend has it that because of Miriam’s piety there was a well that followed the Israelites as they wandered throughout the desert, and after her death the well disappeared. So the community is without water, and once again they complain to Moses and Aaron.
God tells Moses and Aaron to take the rod and order the rock to yield water in front of the people. Moses assembles the people in front of the rock as God commands, and he says to them, “Listen you rebels, shall we get water for you out of this rock?” And Moses raises his hand and strikes the rock twice. Out spews a copious amount of water, and the community and their animals drink.
But God says to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me enough to affirm my holiness in front of the Israelite people, therefore you will not lead this congregation into the Promised Land.” Towards the end of our portion Aaron too dies and the community mourns him as they did his sister Miriam.
After our activity, we asked the question, what was so bad about Moses hitting the rock? Why is it so important to use your words when you want something? Mouth beats rock because when you speak nicely, you can overcome even the hardest of things, like a rock. Rock beats stick since when you try to use force and hit, you just end up getting beat by a rock. It’s not moving no matter how hard you hit it. Stick beats mouth because it reminds us that if you don’t speak nicely you can get “hit” with a consequence. This week our core value is Kavanah, Kavanah is spiritualty, but it is also intention. Our intention, the reason we do and say things, matters.
On Sunday, we say goodbye to our friends in Rishon. We have had tons of fun introducing them to Camp Wise and we are looking forward to seeing them all back at The Home of Happiness for the 2019 summer!

They have also been exploring nature in the teva cabin activity, creating a podcast to send home to their parents, and enjoyed a big paint party with the whole village of Chalutzim! It’ll soon be CW night and we’ll be sad to see them go, but we’re also very glad to know they’ve all had an awesome summer at Camp Wise!

What a week it has been with Solel! Every day just keeps getting better and better. This week, Solel got that chance to celebrate our first Shabbat at the home of happiness and went crazy during spirit circle. Currently Solel is on their second trip traveling to Cincinnati and Kentucky. While on the trip we have had the opportunity to spend a beautiful sunny day at Kings Island, where we rode many roller coasters and ate a lot of yummy blue ice cream. Along with Kings Island, we drove to Kentucky where we went alpine sliding, trampoline jumping, and had a spooky tour in mammoth cave. We can’t wait for what will come next and add on to this incredible summer.
